This facility honors Ishinomori Shotaro (1938–1998), one of Japan’s most celebrated manga artists and often called the “Manga King” for his prolific output and lasting influence. Ishinomori was born in what is now the town of Nakada, part of present-day Tome. He lived there until he graduated from high school. The museum commemorates his contributions to Japanese popular culture and his connection to his hometown.
Exhibits explore Ishinomori’s life and works through original artwork, character models, and even a replica of his former apartment, offering a glimpse of the environment in which he worked. A special exhibition space is used for rotating displays, often featuring original sketches or thematic shows. Visitors can look through his publications and watch video installations that highlight key works and career milestones.
The museum reflects Ishinomori’s local roots by incorporating elements of the surrounding landscape. It was built near the site of his childhood home, and a stream alongside the promenade reflects one that once flowed past his family residence. This facility is distinct from the larger Ishinomori Manga Museum in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture. It offers an intimate look at the artist’s life and his enduring connection to his hometown.
A global creative force
Ishinomori published his first work, Nikyu Tenshi (The Second-class Angel), in 1954 while still in high school. Two years later, he moved to Tokyo and became an assistant to Tezuka Osamu (1928–1989), the pioneering manga artist known as the “Godfather of Manga”, whose mentorship strongly shaped Ishinomori’s storytelling. While assisting Tezuka, Ishinomori contributed to Astro Boy, one of the most successful manga and anime franchises in history.
Ishinomori went on to achieve international fame in his own right. He is perhaps best known for Cyborg 009, one of Japan’s earliest science-fiction manga about a team of heroes, and Kamen Rider (The Masked Rider), a live-action superhero series, which is a filmed adaptation of an animated manga, using real actors instead of animation.
He also created the original Super Sentai concept with the 1975 series Himitsu Sentai Gorenger (Secret Task Force Five Rangers), laying the foundation for the long-running Japanese franchise. His work later became the source material for the US media franchise Power Rangers, a highly successful superhero TV series.
