The city of Tome offers a range of educational programs that explore the connections between nature, agriculture, and rural life.
Tome is one of Tohoku’s leading rice-producing areas. Farmers cultivate rice using sustainable methods that limit the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Visitors can take part in seasonal activities such as rice planting or harvesting, and the gathering of fruits and vegetables. These hands-on experiences offer participants an understanding of food production and environmental responsibility in the area.
Another key feature of Tome’s appeal is the Izunuma-Uchinuma wetlands. This is a Ramsar-registered site and one of Japan’s major wintering grounds for swans and geese. Guided walks around the wetlands introduce the ways agriculture and nature coexist, while some programs may include lectures on environmental conservation or local agricultural innovation.
A popular educational option is to stay with a local host family. Program participants have opportunities to engage in agriculture, forestry, animal care, or fruit farming, depending on their host’s occupation, and may even assist in the preparation of local dishes. Staying with a family promotes cultural exchange and helps create a sense of community as visitors connect with residents.
Tome’s programs are ideal for schools, families, and other groups. They encourage direct engagement with the land and its people, and can be curated to meet the specific needs and interests of program participants.
