This museum showcases works by Sato Satoru (1945–), a visual artist from Tome. Around 350 pieces trace his career from his teenage years as a student at Miyagi Prefecture Sanuma High School to the present day.
The museum also holds more than 250 works donated by artists and collectors he met during the four decades he lived and worked in Paris. Sato periodically advises on the curation of exhibitions drawn from the museum’s collection, which includes paintings, reliefs, models, sketches, drawings, collages, and prints.
After earning a degree in fine arts at a Japanese university, Sato moved to Paris to hone his skills. A 1970 trip to Egypt, where he encountered the pyramids, proved pivotal in his artistic evolution, sparking his interest in geometry and structure.
In 1979, he began exploring a new direction focused on verticality, which he termed geometric constructive art. Sato’s experimentation with intermediate constructions—works positioned between painting and relief—led him to sculpture. These pieces reflect his interest in integrating art with the environment.
He went on to produce many works of environmental art for outdoor display. They include sculptures and landscape designs that interact with their natural or urban settings. Fourteen of these are displayed around the city. Please see the map on the museum’s website for locations.
The museum opened in 2007 at the Tome City Nakada Lifelong Learning Center, housed in a former elementary school. In addition to displaying Sato’s works, the museum offers art programs for local schools and the general public.
