Each winter, Izunuma-Uchinuma transforms into a sanctuary for tens of thousands of migratory birds, with greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons) and whooper swans (Cygnus cygnus) among the most numerous. The birds travel thousands of kilometers from their breeding grounds in the Russian Far East to winter in the shallow waters of the nutrient-rich wetlands. Since the lakes rarely freeze over, the birds can feed on plants in the water, while foraging in the surrounding rice fields allows them to supplement their diet.
The birds generally leave the lakes at sunrise to spend the day in the surrounding farmland before returning in the evening. Visitors to the lakes at these times are treated to an impressive sight: at dawn, tens of thousands of birds take to the sky in unison, while at dusk, the sky fills with V-shaped bird formations as they return to the wetland.
Observation decks and other strategically placed structures around the lake allow spectators to get a close-up view and take photos without disturbing the birds. Visitors are asked to refrain from using the flash on their cameras. Those who come at times other than dawn and sundown can purchase food to give to birds lingering around the edge of the lake.
The Miyagi Prefectural Izunuma-Uchinuma Sanctuary Center, on the north shore of the wetland, offers exhibits on local wildlife and culture, together with views of the area through live cameras and field scopes from the second-floor lounge.
